Charlie Productions : The Film Centre

The Film Centre is now a large database of people working or wanting to work on independent UK film production but when we first started making films it was also an actual real place that you could go to and hire stuff from.

It was thanks to David, Nathan and Boyd that we were able to shoot "Crowd Scene For Existentialists" on 16mm; a decision which, at the time, had been simply capricious on our behalf but, in the end, probably helped to convince the people at the Edinburgh Film Festival to put it on.

Letting us take the camera was not simply a matter of usual hire though since at the time we didn't realise that an SRII was especially more complicated or expensive than the Sony DVCAM machine we'd used on the previous film. Since we were quite clearly hopeless amateurs the guys at the Film Centre would have been quite within their rights to send us packing but instead Boyd came with us and taught us how to use the camera. And he did this unpaid.

Not sure where all of the guys have gone now but Boyd is still there, still helping people make films, still making a difference to film in this country at the unshowy end of it all, at just the place where it matters most.

Charlie Productions believe passionately in doing things and always trying to stop in time for tea.
