Charlie Productions : Camera Operator
A lot of the time the Director of Photography will shoot their own stuff, and there are reasons for and against this. Basically it comes down to thought - some work better knowing where they can put a light rather than having to compromise for an operator, whilst others prefer concentrating wholly on the lighting.
Being the Camera Operator is a cool job. With your steady hands you do exciting moves and keep up with the action. You are the eyes of the film. You are all important. Consequently lots of people want to play with cameras.
Yes you need an eye but practise is everything in this game. I know that many will frown upon me saying so, but I think camcorders are a great training tool for operating in early years - nearly always handheld, it's very hard to compose and keep very good framing. Working with shonky tripods means you have to get smoother, you can't rely on the support. As time goes by and you get to play with bigger and better tools it'll all be that much easier and easier for the training with the shonk. Paint the fence, young one.
