Charlie Productions : 2nd Assistant Camera
As Chris worked at The Cruet Company for so long, he met a lot of Camera Assistants, and since we started finding our feet with crew we've taken as many as we can with us. They're a step above, you see. Trained for TV, they're willing to do the jobs of many many people, in fact, they're eager and keen to keep working at all times. Many of them ar trained for film as well, of course, and the more the experience, the closer they're allowed to the camera.
The 1st Assistant Camera or Focus Puller is in charge of the other assistants, in charge of the camera equipment and in charge of keeping everything in focus. Not a job that either of us ever want to be in charge of.
The 2nd AC or Clapper/Loader is in charge of Clapping the board at the start (or end) of the take in a steady fashion so it can be seen and heard to clap, loading and unloading the film (not a job that either of us want to be in charge of again) and writing all the notes for the lab. Or is that the 1st? Karen? She knows. Basically Karen (our Focus Puller on the last however-many projects) runs the show and we do what she tells us. Anyway.
The Camera Trainee gets to do the fun stuff like lugging all the gear around. Occasionally they get to step in for the Clapper Loader whilst they are loading. Then it's back to lugging gear around and being told off for doing things wrong. But that's where to start, indeed sometimes that's a step above where people start, as they start off running and work their way into the affections of a trainee ready to make the step up to Clapper Loader...
