Charlie Productions : Costume Designer
As you may imagine, the Costume Designer designs the costumes. This means they have an intimate knowledge of clothes of all periods and have ideas of their own whilst being pretty nimble with a sewing machine.
A lot of the time, especially on a contemporary low-budget film, they'll be doing more buying and sourcing of clothes - and they can do amazing things with tiny budgets for the right project, bringing a huge amount of clothes that really add amazing things to each character. If you think of the amount of decisions you make just to get dressed each morning - well, the costume designer has thought out weeks of dressing for each and every character, and there are few things more revealing of character than the way they dress, it being one of the first things that really tells the outside world who you are.
A costume designer can be the best friend of a director - when the actors are away from the set, they're often near costume, often trying on a new or different costume, and so a good and intimate rapport with the designer can bring enormous dividends in terms of helping create a deep, engaging and meaningful character. All whilst using the language of clothes and style, rather than motivation and dialogue - which is incredibly good for giving a bigger perspective on the character for actors.
