Charlie Productions : Costume Department
On a low-budget film, it can be quite easy to think that you can just get the actors to bring their own clothes. After all, they'll look right in their own clothes, won't they?
Which is a real missed opportunity. Because a good costume department will bring an entirely new eye to your film, one which, and I obviously generalise massively here, us men generally have no real clue about. The cut, the colour, the line, the length - the style, dammit, of what your character should actually dress in, becomes a huge and amazingly deep subject that you can spend hours debating and coming to the right answer. Getting costume that actively adds understanding of your character will help bring your film to life tremendously - and the day when the actors get to try on the mounds of stuff the costume guys bring out of the huge huge bags they trawl around with them is an incredibly exciting one, where your actor turns from being your actor doing some acting into the character you wrote on the page so long ago.
