Charlie Productions : Assistant Editor
The Assistant Editor generally puts everything in order so the Editor can just get on with Editing.
This can sometimes mean syncing the pictures and the sound and definitely means labelling and ordering all the shots into the correct 'bins' (virtual these days rather than actual bins on shelves) so the shots for any one scene are all present and correct and ready to go.
It can very occasionally mean editing together a rough cut for the Editor to refine (or throw out and start again). It definitely means backing everything up onto at least three forms of digital storage.
In short, the assistant editor is there to make the editor's job as painless as possible. And in return, they get to watch and learn as the editor crafts a film together, all with a view to becoming a full-on editor themselves soon enough.
