Charlie Productions : Editor

An editor is someone who likes spending all of their time in a darkened room. They will rarely glimpse sunlight - only in the morning on the way to the edit suite and out of the window when they pop to the toilet. In return for this light deprivation (and a tendency to work extremely long hous, the time passing by quite easily when you have no sunrise or sunset for reference), they get to sit in the magic theatre of dreams every day.

Or something not quite as poncy as that. But as many film-makers have said before, it is in the edit where you learn to craft a story. And an editor does only that, with only what is in front of them, with no thoughts of "this was how it was supposed to be" or "I remember that take being great". We're very glad to have bought a computer and Final Cut Pro - not because we don't like editors, but because it freed us from having to pay to learn how to make stories with pictures. Perhaps one of the greatest things about editors is that they do not have the huge amount of thoughts that a director carries with them about the film - they can see what works quicker.

In this new dawn of film, the video age, there is starting to be a second editor (who's been there for some time in TV and commercials and the like). This is the Online Editor. Using the top-spec kit, the online editor does little in the way of changing the cut of the film, but everything in making it look as good as possible. This does mean the editor is getting labelled the Offline Editor, which makes them sound like they're not doing very much, but what the hell, I didn't come up with the terms. I suppose "Editor" and "Colorist" makes more sense...
