Charlie Productions : Gaffer

The Gaffer is not in charge of everything, merely all the electrics which of course decides whether we all die or not. They also have a creative role in helping the DoP formulate the lighting plan to make it all look the way it should. They are a qualified electrician who likes to fanny about with lighting, in other words. Sort of an Electrician cum Interior Designer, you might say.

Well, no. The Gaffer knows the way it is. If the Gaffer is annoyed, it is because the shoot is running over time, or there haven't been enough breaks, or long enough breaks, or the food was dodgy. They are the barometer for all the crew's good or ill will, whilst at the same time lugging around huge, hot and heavy lamps without complaint, always ready with another suggestion for perhaps another flag or a net or some reflection or some charlie bars. And no, I'm not saying what charlie bars are for.
