Charlie Productions : Runner
Everyone's starting place.
Ok, not everyone's. But for a large amount of the people who work on films, their first job was as a runner - often unpaid. Expected to be the first there and the last to leave, ready to make tea, sweep up, carry stuff and run off to get whatever it is that is needed or has been forgotten, it can be a pretty thankless job.
However, it's a good place to start. Whilst people with common sense and foresight do the best jobs and become relied upon quickly, everyone gets to spend time on set discovering how the whole structure of the thing works, the jargon used, the jobs done. If you're at all unsure what direction you want your filmic career to take, the very best thing you can do is work as a runner and really find out about the different routes you can take.
