Charlie Productions : Sound Department
"Waiting for Sound..."
The traditional call of the camera crew who, having spent a couple of hours setting up the next shot, now give the soundies grief for not having the mics set when they've finally deigned to sit down on their dollies, ready to be wheeled backwards and forwards for the masterful piece of work they are just about to accomplish.
Meanwhile, the sound department know that they will be given little time, will generally be ignored even when they're asking for another take, and will often be replaced entirely in post by redubbed voices and someone walking on gravel. That said, it's not a thankless task at all - there's nothing more gratifying to us than seeing the soundie light up with excitement at the sounds they are capturing for us to lace into the film.
Often these days it's possible to put the sound straight into the camera, so it's already synced up with the picture, but we generally prefer the sound department to have their own autonomy, with their own recorder, able to get wherever they need to go to get the best sound, not just of the take but of the environment around us as we set up the next shot - giving them the freedom to create means that the sound design will come alive, and so will the film.
