Charlie Productions : Stills Photographers

It's the first thing you are told to make sure you get when you are trained on "how to make a film". Five good stills from the film. They are of course incredibly important - the stills are probably going to be seen more than the film. A good image can grab the interest someone who had no thought of watching your film beforehand.

Over the years we've been good and bad at getting stills. It's never good enough to try and do them yourself (you will doubtless forget about the camera soon enough) and it's probably not achievable at the smaller scale to do a Stanley Kubrick and print up frames from the film. If you're using video, even high def, the pictures simply aren't going to be big enough to be usable in print. They use 300-600 dots per inch. High Def is 2000 pixels across. That's six inches if you're lucky...

So this is where the stills photographer comes in. Always trying to get their still before everyone wraps the shot to move onto the next one, always trying to keep out of the way and yet be incredibly creative, always hoping the director will give them some time to try out some ideas they've talked about... We've been using Jessica Thomas for several films now and she has both such a wonderful eye and a great way with the actors and crew that she is an indispensable part of our team now. Her stills adorn this website and help us create what we think are wonderful images to interest an audience.
