Charlie Productions : Karen Fraser

Karen Fraser

Put simply, Karen is the Queen of our shoots. What she says goes. We like to say that we are self-taught and that is right in the creative sense. But Karen has taught us how we are supposed to work with film, patiently explaining to us why we need to wait until 'Camera Speed' is called before we shout 'Action!' and so on until we can almost be relied upon to shout 'End Board!' instead of 'Cut!' when the board needs to go at the end, not the start. Almost...

Karen's first job focus pulling on film was for us on Old Man Dies. Not that we gave her much time to prepare. Karen was supposed to be loading on the first day, but Greg Duffield had been run down by a car only a couple of days before, leaving him with a broken wrist. There wasn't much chance he'd be able to turn the focus wheel. So we turned to Karen. She wasn't expecting it, and we were trying to do long complicated tracking moves, but she kept her cool and when the rushes came back we weren't suprised that everything was sharply in focus.

Since then we've made sure she is with us on everything we do - she adds so much to a professional shoot that we'd be a little scared if she wasn't there with us. Like many others, Karen started out at The Cruet Company but after going freelance she decided to take the long, hard road of working as a Camera Trainee so she could get working on film, dramas and commercials. It's worked for her, and for us: we've appreciated that decision many many times. She has raised our game to new levels and we hope she'll continue to do so for a long, long time. Since making the decision to go freelance she has progressed and upped her stakes to Lighting Camera (Director of Photography) which means that she is even more ace than before... if that were possible.

Name...
Karen Fraser

Speciality
Making pretty pictures and talking.

How did you come across Ben and Chris?
I used to work with Chris at Cruet Co. and first worked with them both on "Old Man" when Greg got broken and couldn't pull focus.

What is your most vivid memory of the Blaine Brothers?
Running screaming toward us on a pier screaming "they're shitting on us!" pursued by a swarm of birds. Ben on the promenade In Blackpool, patiently trying to help us make sense of it all. Chris grinning as we filmed the wanking scene in Panda. Them both surrounded by a sea of hyped up kids; trying to keep control in the playground scene of Revolution.

What’s your favourite Blaine brothers’ film?
Really can't choose between Panda and Revolution.

Name something you aim to do in the next 5 hours.
Have at least 10 minutes without the kids screaming.

Milk in before tea or tea in before milk?
Depends if my nan's watching.

Jammy dodgers or bourbon fingers?
I'm drawn to the smiley faces, but the chocolate wins every time.

List a handful of your favourite films.

Godfather

Pick 5 words to describe yourself all beginning with the initial of your first name.
I think I'll let people come up with their own descriptions of me.

Shoe size?
Depends how much I want the shoes.

You're on your way to get a costume for a fancy dress party. Unfortunately they only have a prawn costume left. In an ideal world (one where no one hires out all the costumes) what would you prefer to dress up as?
A skinny girl that can boggel.

Ben or Chris?
Never

BiNGO sends his love, what do you send him?
Some home made chunky marmalade.
