Charlie Productions : 2006

11.11.06 Hallo Panda.

Our best and last short film, "Hallo Panda" is finally complete. Starring Steven Beckingham, Benedict Wong, Peter Elliot and Cariad Lloyd it is an unromantic comedy about love, lust and animal instincts. Funded by the Film Council and Film4 through their Cinema Extreme programme it is written and directed by Ben and Chris Blaine and produced by Quinny Sacks and Barrington Paul Robinson. It will recieve it's first public screening as part of the Encounters Film Festival in Bristol on the 24th of this month. Tonight we get drunk, tomorrow we may finally get some sleep.

07.10.06 More Revolution!

We are delighted to announce that "Death Of The Revolution" will be taking part in the Seagate Foyle Film Festival which runs from the 10th - 19th November. The film will also be screening as part of Bite Size Cinema's Autumn 2006 Selection in, amongst other venues, the Curzon Soho on the 19th October.

23.09.06 Global Revolution!

Along with screening this coming Friday in Saint John, Canada and later next month in the 50th London Film Festival, our short film "Death Of The Revolution" will be taking part in the 51st Cork Film Festival, The Reykjavik International Film Festival and the Austin Film Festival making it easily the most globally successful film we've yet made.
Timings for most of these events are not yet available but, if you want to see the film in London on Monday 30th October at 9pm in NFT 1, then book now by clicking here!

10.09.06 The London Revolution.

Fresh from some superb screenings up at the Edinburgh Film Festival we are delighted to announce that "Death Of The Revolution" will be screening in NFT1 on Monday 30th October at 9pm as part of this years London Film Festival. This is the first time any of our films have been shown at the London Film Festival so we're all a bit damn happy.
Not least because before it gets to London "Death Of The Revolution" will screen as part of this years Continental Drift International Short Film Festival in Canada as well as screening at the CCA in Glasgow on the 20th of September as part of the Magic Lantern short film night, alongside other Edinburgh favourites "The Other Man", and "Ex Memoria".

09.08.06 The Edinburgh Revolution.

Just to remind you all, "Death Of The Revolution" will be screening at the Edinburgh International Film Festival as it competes for both the Prix European and The Best British Short Film Award. The industry screening is on Saturday 19th August and there are public performances on Monday 21st and Wednesday 23rd. You can book tickets for these events here. The Blaine Brothers and their friends will be in Edinburgh from the 19th to 21st, please get in touch if you'd like to arrange a meeting. Also keep your eyes peeled for Pandas Cariad Lloyd (Shakespeare for Breakfast, Hansel & Gretel and Mixt Nutz ) Neil Edmond (Knocker)

03.08.06 Free Speech At The Big Chill

Which is just what you'd expect from such a delightful event. But yeah, thanks to our dear friends Phil and Kate at the Halloween Society our much admired short film "Free Speech" will be getting another outing at the Big Chill Festival this weekend. If you are intending to go to the festival, please also keep your eyes peeled for Adam Brown. Photographs of him enjoying himself will be gratefully received.

24.07.06 Some Panda from the BBC.

Well the editing's coming along fine and dandy, Chris is knocking back the Red Bull and now sleeps from 8am to 1pm before getting back on that rocking edit horse for another 17 hour day... More importantly though, you can have a look at us at what I thought was our most strung out and illiterate thanks to stress and tiredness on the fantastic BBC Film Network who've put together a look behind the scenes...

10.07.06 SLEEP.

This is hopefully going to happen very soon now that we have not only wrapped "Hallo Panda" but cut together a rather long rough cut. The shoot was incredibly tough but thanks to our amazing crew and some quite frankly outstanding performances the film is going to be top. There'll be something on BBC Film Network about Panda in a couple of weeks but for now why not check out the wonderful Simon Ellis waiting for sunrise.

Meanwhile, whilst we've been totally wrapped up in black and white fur, Death Of The Revolution has come out of hibernation and is up for not one but two awards at the Edinburgh International Film Festival (programme is announced in two days so I guess we're being naughty in saying this now, but what the hell, it's not every day one of our films is up for Best British Short and a European Prix UIP, whatever that is)... and it'll be playing on the other side of the world in the equally prestigious Melbourne International Film Festival on 28th July...

07.06.06 Screen International Panda Special.

Well OK they've not actually published an entire edition devoted to the film, but with the Blaines and Barrington on the cover of the current "Stars of Tomorrow" issue and DP Olli Russell and Production Designer Katie MacGregor joining them on the inside it's the next best thing. Or perhaps a better thing because this is a big article telling the world that we're all generally top. Sign up for your free online Screen International here and read all about us...

And if that's not enough Blaines for you to read on trains, then get a copy of this weeks Hotdog magazine and find Mr.Winterton's informative article on the Guiding Lights programme... high brow and low brow, we attack from both sides of film journalism...

23.05.06 Back In The Top 5.

Thank you very much to everyone who has recently been digging "Free Speech" out of the electronic vaults on the Atom website and put us back in their list of top 5 extreme films. To watch and review "Free Speech" please click here.

08.05.06 Benedict Wong is Panda.

Finally, five months after getting the go ahead from the Film Council and FilmFour, our last short film has begun to come to life thanks to the utterly superb Benedict Wong. With the Panda costume still being built and proper shooting not set to start for over a month, we took Benedict (Panda) and Steven Beckingham (Mark) to KMR Audio to record the voice of the bear. It's been a long slow grind to get here and we're not half way to the top yet but listening to Benny bring life to one of the best characters we've ever written has made the past five months worth all the effort. Cross your fingers for the next bit...

29.04.06 Revolution in Durban and Free Speech in Toronto.

Well whizz for us and all clap hands - two different film festivals, two different films as our latest short "Death Of The Revolution" gets it's first international outing at the 27th Durban International Film Festival from the 14th - 25th of June and our audience favourite "Free Speech" gets another run out at the World Wide Short Film Festival in Toronto from 13th -18th of June.

04.04.06 Nothing Funnier.

We take a sick pleasure in the recent announcement from The Oscar Moore Screenwriting Prize that after "a long and careful process" their consideration of the 154 comedy feature scripts submitted, including our own "Mouchak & Junce", has lead them to decide "not to make an Award this year. There will be no winner of the Oscar Moore Screenwriting Prize in 2006."

So there we go, proof positive that no one has written a script funnier than "Mouchak & Junce". It's a squalid sense of success, but as Darwin will tell you, life is neither about winning nor taking part, it's just about not losing. Tepid champagne is flowing freely at Charlie Mansions...

02.03.06 Guiding Lights

Guiding Lights, the superb new mentoring scheme from the Film Council, SkillSet and Lighthouse launched last night at the Soho Hotel. Through this scheme the Blaine Brothers are going to be able to spend the next year working under the watchful eye of Gilles McKinnon. Quite simply this is one of the best things that has ever happened to us, so we're feeling a bit chuffed.

25.02.06 British Council Join The Revolution!

We are delighted to announce that our latest short film "Death Of The Revolution" is now being supported by the British Council and will enter into their catalogue of British film for 2006. The British Council have in the past supported our films "Russell Square", "City Spirit" and "Old Man Dies" so it's great to have this distinguished cultural institution on our side once again.

09.01.06 Hallo Panda

No better way to start the year than with good news, and we are delighted to kick off 2006 with the announcement that the Blaine Brothers have been commissioned to make a short film called "Hallo Panda" for The Film Council and Film Four's Cinema Extreme scheme.

"Hallo Panda" is an unromantic comedy about a man and a talking bear, more information as it comes.
