What course of action is open to Tony other than to inspire a juvenile revolt? With thrust, justice and his comrade pupils marching by his side, what can possibly stop him...?

Death Of The Revolution is a vivid and delightful political fantasy anchored by a brilliant central performance from first-time actor Alastair Marshall. Ten at the time of shooting, this precocious and difficult role was the first part Alastair had ever taken on. Spotted by directors Ben and Chris Blaine at the school where they were to shoot the film, Alastair was given the role because of a natural affinity with the part that soon became clear in auditions. However, no one quite expected him to take to the filming process with such ease and professionalism.

Former Russian leader, Vladimir Lenin, famously said: "A revolution is impossible without a revolutionary situation; furthermore, not every revolutionary situation leads to revolution." This is particularly apt in reference to the Blaine brothers' Death Of The Revolution in which a young boy named Tony is accused of stealing a pencil from a fellow student and is reprimanded by his teacher. Instead of taking it on the chin, Tony feels enraged and through an inner monologue we hear his enlightened thoughts about the injustices of a repressive society and his determination to speak out and inspire the other students to rise up and fight. Unfortunately, his moment of truth is spoiled by a humorous prank from another student.

The film cleverly realizes the contrasting capabilities and astuteness of youth with its more simple innocent side, expressed through juvenile humour. There are some wonderful dreamlike sequences inspired by the Russian revolution, which are reminiscent of scenes from the Pink Floyd's The Wall, in which students take dramatic action against the school system, interspersed with scenes of gentle naughtiness similar in style to the popular 1960s children's book series, Just William.

A nominee for Best Short Film at the 2007 Edinburgh International Film Festival and the European Prix UIP for best short, this film has continued to receive widespread acclaim and as writer/director Dictynna Hood points out "it gets even funnier every viewing."
